IAB (§ 7g EStG): Save Taxes with a Purchase-Charter Yacht

Special Feature in German Tax Law

Sailing Passion Meets Tax Optimization:

How to Use the Investment Tax Credit (Section 7g of the German Income Tax Act) to Finance an Investment in a Sailing Yacht

When the wind fills the sails, the bow gently cuts through the waves, and everyday life fades into the distance, sailors experience true freedom. For many entrepreneurs, freelancers, and high-earning employees in Germany, however, the dream of owning a yacht in the Mediterranean is more than just a hobby—it’s an attractive opportunity to invest in a yacht.

What many people don’t know: The investment deduction (IAB) under Section 7g of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) offers a unique way to combine the thrill of sailing with smart wealth building. German tax law offers an exclusive opportunity here to significantly reduce your tax burden and invest the freed-up capital directly in your own charter yacht (or a catamaran).

As your experienced yacht dealer, Yachten Meltl will show you how to make your dream of owning a boat a reality in a financially smart and tax-optimized way.

Benefits of the IAB when buying a yacht

A pure financial product generates no emotions. A boat lying unused in the harbor generates only costs. The purchase-charter model in combination with the IAB (§ 7g EStG) resolves this dilemma and combines the best of both worlds:

    • Tax leverage: Up to 50% of the anticipated acquisition costs can be claimed for tax purposes. Please note statutory maximum and profit limits.
    • Tax Relief: Sailing yachts and catamarans used commercially as part of a charter management program are considered tangible asset investments.
    • Personal Use & Freedom: If you wish, you can use the yacht during your vacation—or a comparable model from our partner network—at highly attractive special rates for unforgettable sailing trips with family and friends.

§ 7g EStG: Tax Efficiency for Sailors in Detail

Section 7g of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) supports the acquisition of movable business assets. What is special for watersport enthusiasts: A commercially chartered sailing yacht is considered under tax law a fully IAB-eligible tangible asset investment.

Detail Relevance for Your Yacht Investment
Target Audience Entrepreneurs, self-employed individuals, doctors, lawyers, and employees with a high tax burden (through the formation of a new GmbH & CoKG)
Applicable to brand-new sailing yachts (e.g., Bavaria Yachts, Dufour Yachts, etc.) as well as well-maintained used yachts from the charter fleet
Tax Advantage Unique incentive structure under German tax law: The option to claim up to 50% of the net acquisition costs (max. €200,000 IAB) as a tax-deductible expense. This applies to the yacht investor’s residence or business location in Germany, not to the yacht’s mooring location or the location where it is chartered. It is important that the yacht be chartered through a professional buy-charter program. The intention to generate a profit must be present.

For Whom Is This Sailing and Investment Concept Ideal?

The model is aimed at discerning individuals who want to combine emotional values with responsible financial planning:

    • Entrepreneurs & Freelancers: Strategically convert high tax burdens into maritime tangible assets.
    • High-earning employees: Start your own GmbH & CoKG and use the IAB as a lever for your maritime investment.

Example calculation: How to turn taxes into liquid equity

How does the investment deduction (§ 7g EStG) work in practice? If you purchase a brand-new or as-good-as-new cruising yacht and charter it out for commercial purposes, you can claim up to 50% of the estimated acquisition costs for tax purposes even before the purchase.

The following sample calculation illustrates the enormous liquidity advantage of purchasing a charter yacht (e.g., a Bavaria C46 or a Dufour 41):

    Case Study:

Yacht Investment with €400,000 Net Acquisition Price

    Calculation step Value / amount
Net acquisition costs of the new yacht €400,000
    Maximum IAB according to § 7g EStG (50%) €200,000
Possible tax savings / refund (at approx. 45% marginal tax rate) approx. €90,000
Effective capital deployment upon purchase €310,000

    Transparency and Risk Notices

For a solid foundation, clear statements about the framework conditions of a charter investment are also necessary:

    • 5
Charter income Rental income depends on booking numbers, the season, and the cruising area. Fixed returns are not guaranteed.
    • 5
Value retention and maintenance: Yachts are subject to natural wear and tear. Professional management ensures value retention, but does not replace market-driven value performance.
    • 5
Tax Considerations: Every IAB structure must be coordinated individually with your tax advisor and implemented by the deadline. Be sure to seek comprehensive advice from your tax firm on this matter.
