Which route to your own yacht suits you?
Comparing the options for yacht ownership
Private purchase, yacht sharing or purchase charter?
The dream of owning your own yacht no longer necessarily has to be tied to a traditional purchase. Alongside private purchase, attractive alternatives such as yacht sharing and purchase charter have become established. Which model is right depends primarily on your budget, your sailing habits and your personal goals.
In this article, we compare the three options and show you which solution is best suited to which requirements.
3 ownership models at a glance
In principle, you have three models to choose from:
- Private purchase – you buy the yacht outright and are the sole owner.
- Yacht sharing – several owners share the purchase, operating costs and use.
- Purchase charter – your yacht is professionally chartered out while you use it yourself during defined periods.
Each model offers different advantages and is aimed at different target groups.

Private purchase – maximum freedom and individuality
Private purchase is the classic form of yacht ownership.
You decide on the equipment, home port, use and maintenance yourself. The yacht is entirely yours and can be used at any time.
Advantages of private purchase
Private purchase is ideal for owners who use their yacht regularly, want maximum flexibility and are willing to take full responsibility for their yacht.
Yacht sharing – shared ownership, shared costs
With yacht sharing, several owners purchase shares in a high-quality sailing yacht or catamaran. Purchase, maintenance and operating costs are shared, while organisation and management are handled professionally.
Advantages of yacht sharing
- lower investment costs
- reduced ongoing costs
- professional yacht management
- high-quality yachts on attractive terms
Who Is Yacht Sharing Suitable For?
Yacht sharing is ideal for sailors who want to spend several weeks a year on the water without bearing the costs and organisational effort of sole ownership.
Purchase charter (Yachtinvest) - the smart combination of use and return
With purchase charter, you buy a new yacht that is managed and chartered out by an experienced charter company. During non-charter periods, the yacht is available for your own cruises.
Advantages of purchase charter
- professional support
- income from chartering
- regular maintenance
- high utilisation
Who is Yachtinvest suitable for?
This model is particularly suitable for buyers who do not use their yacht themselves year-round and at the same time want to benefit from professional chartering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which model is the most affordable?
That depends on individual usage behaviour. While yacht sharing reduces entry costs, private purchase offers maximum flexibility. Purchase charter can offset part of the ongoing costs through charter income.
Can I switch models later?
Yes. Many owners start, for example, with yacht sharing and later decide to move to full private ownership.

When is private purchase of a yacht worthwhile?
Private purchase is particularly suitable for owners who use their yacht regularly and want to enjoy maximum freedom. You decide on the equipment, berth, cruising area and voyage planning yourself. Anyone who spends many weeks a year on the water and wants to configure their yacht individually usually benefits from classic sole ownership.
Is yacht sharing or private purchase the better choice?
That depends primarily on your planned usage. Anyone who only uses their yacht a few weeks a year can significantly reduce acquisition and operating costs with yacht sharing. Those who want maximum flexibility and unrestricted availability, on the other hand, often opt for private purchase.
What is the difference between purchase charter and yacht sharing?
With purchase charter, you buy a yacht on your own and make it available to a professional charter company for rental during your absence. With yacht sharing, several people own the yacht together and share both the costs and the usage periods. Both models reduce running costs, but differ in ownership structure and usage concept.
Which option is the most affordable way to own a yacht?
There is no blanket answer. Those looking for the lowest acquisition costs often find the most economical solution in yacht sharing. Those who use their yacht intensively themselves often fare better in the long term with private purchase. Purchase charter can be attractive if charter income is intended to cover part of the running costs.
How do I find out which yacht model suits me?
The right decision depends on several factors: How often do you want to sail? Which cruising area are you in? Do you prefer a sailing yacht or a catamaran? Do you want to use the yacht exclusively privately or also commercially? Individual advice helps to find the right solution.
What running costs arise with yacht ownership?
In addition to the purchase price, owners should also consider running costs such as berth, insurance, maintenance, winter storage, service, repairs and, where applicable, financing. Depending on the ownership model, these costs can be borne entirely yourself or shared through charter income or multiple owners respectively.
Can I try out a yacht before buying?
Yes. Many current sailing yachts and catamarans can be tested as part of a trial voyage or charter holiday within our quality network Nautic Alliance. This way you get to know sailing characteristics, comfort and equipment under real conditions and make an informed purchase decision.
In which sailing areas can I use the yacht sharing, purchase charter or private purchase models through Yachten Meltl?
That depends entirely on your sailing preferences. We offer many options for Europe's most attractive sailing areas:
-
Chiemsee & inland waters: Perfect for classic private purchase or regional yacht sharing of smaller models (e.g. Bente Yachts).
-
Croatia & the Adriatic: The absolute premium sailing area for our purchase charter model (Yachtinvest). Through our close partnership with Nautic Alliance, you benefit here from first-class marina infrastructure and extremely high charter utilization for sailing yachts and catamarans (e.g. from Bavaria, Dufour or Nautitech).
-
Baltic Sea & rest of the Mediterranean: Here too we arrange individual private purchases, charter management and tailored owner communities for you.
Who takes care of maintenance, care and winter storage for yacht sharing and purchase charter?
This is the biggest advantage of these two models compared to classic private purchase: The organizational effort for you tends towards zero.
-
With yacht sharing, professional yacht management coordinated by us handles all administration. This includes annual maintenance, regular cleaning, insurance as well as winterization and recommissioning. The costs are transparently allocated proportionally to the owner community.
-
With purchase charter (Yachtinvest), the yacht charter company on site at the marina (e.g. in Croatia) takes care of the vessel. The yacht is professionally marketed and booked, and after each charter trip is professionally cleaned and technically inspected. You simply arrive, take over a perfectly maintained vessel and enjoy your holiday.
How does a yacht refinance itself in the purchase charter model and what tax advantages are there?
In the purchase charter model, you acquire the yacht as a commercial owner. A professional charter company charters out your vessel during the weeks when you are not using it yourself on holiday.
-
Refinancing: The charter income generated ideally not only covers the running operating costs (such as berth, insurance and maintenance), but also finances part of the purchase or generates a return.
-
Tax benefits: Since the yacht is operated commercially, in many countries (such as Croatia) it is possible to deduct input VAT on the purchase – meaning you buy the yacht net. In addition, the yacht’s depreciation can be claimed for tax purposes. Your tax advisor can provide more detailed information on this.
